Lodging in Monasteries

As in many other countries, monasteries in Israel have opened their doors to Christian tourists, and invite them to visit, sleep, and experience the spiritual atmosphere.

The monks, known for their asceticism and humility, spend most of their time studying, praying, and performing spiritual work, but they also earn their living in various ways such as artwork, agriculture, and providing lodging and accommodations.  They are known for their pleasant manners and hospitality, and receive guests in a warm, homelike atmosphere.

Rooms in monasteries are humble and simple, but are clean and meticulous.  These places combine a pastoral panorama, well-tended gardens, and beautiful architecture with a spiritual experience.

There are monasteries scattered throughout the country.  Most are isolated and located far from urban centers in order to heighten the feelings of holiness, isolation and asceticism.  Some, like the monasteries in the Judean Desert, are located in special nature sites.  Others, such as the Beatitude Monastery on Mount of Beatitude, are situated near traditional Christian holy sites and a few are located within Christian communities, such as the Benedictine Monastery in Abu Gosh.  Visitors can enjoy these unique locations, tour the surrounding area, and visit other nearby sites.

Many groups of pilgrims who come to Israel stay in monasteries on a more permanent basis.  In addition to sightseeing and visiting holy Christian sites, they gather in the monasteries for prayer, meetings, and inner contemplation..  The quite and calm, the special authentic character, and the beautiful scenery in the monasteries attract Christian tourists, for whom a visit to a monastery constitutes a religious and spiritual experience in an
atmosphere of holiness and tranquility.
