Yes, this month’s edition of Israel Insights features two amazing new archaeological discoveries that will add to the memories you can make in the Holy Land! You already read about the Canaanite fortress in our feature story, and now we want to tell you about the discovery of a section of a stepped street dating from the Second Temple period (50 BC – 100 AD).
The stepped street is paved in stone slabs and heads south in the direction of the Shiloach Pool. It was discovered in excavations conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority in the Shiloach Pool Excavation at the City of David in the Jerusalem Walls National Park. The road represents the central thoroughfare of Jerusalem that ascended from the northwest corner of the Second Temple Shiloach Pool to the north.
“In the Second Temple Period, pilgrims would begin the ascent to the Temple from here,” said excavation director Professor Ronny Reich of the University of Haifa. “This is the southernmost tip of the road, of which a section has already been discovered along the western face of the Temple Mount.”
