Tomb of Rabbi Akiva

Rabbi Akiva is a beloved figure in Jewish history and lore: From an ignorant shepherd he became a great scholar. His wife Rachel, who married him against the wishes of her father because of Akiva’s poor prospects, supported him; theirs was a great love story. He backed the second-century CE rebel leader Bar Kokhba and was executed by the Romans with the shema prayer on his lips. His tomb, in the old cemetery overlooking Tiberias and the Kinneret, and has been a pilgrimage site at least since the early Middle Ages.
